The Best Travel CPAP Setup

Short version

My travel kit is a small waterless CPAP, one big USB-C power bank, and a handful of cables and filters so I can run it anywhere from a hotel to a raft. A travel machine still needs a prescription like any CPAP, and none of this changes your pressure or therapy settings — it just makes the same therapy portable. If you only ever sleep where there’s an outlet, you can skip most of the battery section.

The travel machine

I use the Breas Z2 Auto . When I was researching travel CPAPs it stood out as one of the smallest and lightest — around 10.4 ounces, small enough to disappear into a backpack or a jacket pocket. It’s quiet for its size (Breas rates it at about 26 dBA at typical settings), and there’s an optional Q-Lite muffler that takes a bit more edge off the airflow sound.

The tradeoffs versus my bedside machine: it’s drier because it uses a waterless humidifier rather than a heated tub (more on that below), and it does sit closer to your ear on a nightstand than a full-size unit would. For a few nights away it’s a fair trade.

Powering it away from an outlet

For nights without shore power I carry the Anker Prime power bank — a 27,650mAh USB-C battery. It isn’t a CPAP-specific battery, and it won’t run a machine that expects a barrel-plug DC input without an adapter. But paired with the Z2 and the right cable it gets me roughly two nights at a moderate pressure with no humidification. That’s covered a long-haul flight, a couple of nights camping, and one overnight power cut at home.

To get from the power bank to the machine you need a cable that outputs the fixed voltage the CPAP expects. The Z2’s supply is 15V 2A, so I use a 15V USB-C PD trigger cable . Both the bank and the cable support USB-C Power Delivery, which negotiates the voltage each device needs. Match the voltage and plug to your own machine before you buy — the wrong voltage can damage it.

To refill the bank quickly I bring the AOHI Magcube 140W charger . The reason for a high-wattage charger on a trip isn’t charging your phone faster — it’s topping the power bank back to full overnight instead of over most of a day. At 140W it refills the Anker in well under an hour.

Keeping the kit together

Everything lives in a CURMIO travel bag — a padded, water-resistant pouch sized for the machine plus mask, hose, cables and the battery. It’s unremarkable, but having one grab-and-go bag is the difference between packing all of it and forgetting the cable I need at 11pm.

Charging off-grid

For trips longer than the battery lasts, I pack a FlexSolar 40W foldable panel . It charges the power bank, not the machine directly, and only meaningfully in good sun — real-world output is well under the rated 40W. I treat it as a way to stretch a multi-night camping trip, not a guaranteed nightly recharge.

Humidification without water

The Z2 doesn’t take a water chamber or distilled water; it uses a Heat-Moisture Exchanger instead. An HME filter is a small disposable cartridge that sits between the mask and hose and recycles some of the warmth and moisture from your own breath. It’s drier than a heated humidifier — my nose notices on a long trip — but it means no hunting for distilled water on the road, and each one lasts about a week. I buy them ten at a time.

When to talk to your doctor or DME

  • You need a prescription for a travel CPAP, and the pressure it runs should be the one your clinician set — a travel machine is for the same therapy, not a chance to experiment with settings.
  • If you’re switching between a heated humidifier at home and an HME on the road and the dryness bothers you, mention it — sometimes the fix is a different mask or a small pressure/humidity adjustment they can make.
  • If you rely on battery power for medical reasons (frequent outages, off-grid living rather than occasional trips), ask your DME about a proper CPAP battery with the right connector rather than a general-purpose power bank.
